Mise-en-scene

Costume

Main protagonist- He will be wearing a classic black suit to give the noir feel. But then also the modern trench coat will add to this feel.

Female- She will have big hair, with red lipstick and matching red nails but also wearing a fur coat.
 The dead man's arm- all he will be wearing is a long sleeved shirt,as all you will be able to see is his arm in the shot.

Cast

This will be our main protagonist.
We chose to cast jack as our male protaginist as he is  quite a tall male and this works well for our main character, but also this works well when he's wearing a suit as he can pull it off better and will look more realistic in our trailer, but also the trench coat will look much better on a taller person. Jack also can also show alot of different expressions which would be suited for our trailer.

This is our femme fatale.
We chose to cast emily as our femme fatale as she is a a blonde and pretty girl and would fit the role of scarlett in our film trailer perfectly. Her hair is quite big which is what we wanted for our character as this would enable us to get a good shot of her flicking her hair. Along with the big red lips in this shot which emily can pull off well.

This is our victim.

Below explains why we have chose to use ryan's hand for our victum.
Although for the trailer our victims hand will only be shown. We have shown the actor anyways.
We decided to take a few pictures of various different peoples hands possible for our trailer and asked people of our target market to give feedback and tell us which one they think will be best and suit better to be a 'dead mans' hand.

These are the images of hands we took;
1.2.

       From these photos, we asked 20 people within the age range of 15-30. Majority vote came to the fourth hand being the best for our trailer, as it's not really bright skin tone and as the hand should be dead, we wanted a more 'blue' tint within the tone and this hand shows this best as our survey concluded but also it shows veins and it is the best fit overall  for 'dead hand.'

Props
Below is typical photos from google images which we are going to gather up to use for our props in our film trailer.
The props that we will use are all related to film noir and will help us to create and connote that classic film noir theme.
A list of our props;
Old looking Matches, Piles of Paper, a basic wooden table and chair, ash tray, whiskey glass with liquid made to look like whiskey, a basic white lamp, fake blood and cigarettes.

Locations
We will only need a few locations, we will use easy basic and accessible places to achieve better ones. As I am going on a planned trip to New york and we wanted our location to be set in New york, we decided that whilst there I could take some footage for
  • A Spare room- as the interview room
  • A street- as the mysterious street
  • Woods- as central park
  • The new york- the skyline

Film Noir moodboard

My film noir moodboard.

This is a moodboard I created in order to reflect my film noir influence that I could use when to help me to produce my own film noir trailer. These are some images that I am using as inspiration for my film noir trailer. They inlcude the typical black and white low lighting and shadows which i really wish to show this influence in my trailer. But also the classic convention of smoking and the smokey effect to create a blurred and mysterious scene as well as this the femme fatle wearing the red liptstick which will stand out againest the black and white. I have also included some modern day film noir movies to show what kind of narative i'd like to inspire me, films such like drive, shutter island and the lookout.

Classic conventions of film noir

Classic conventions of a typical film noir are;

  • Femme Fatale, the dangerous women who is promiscious and sexual and always gets the man in the end
  • A complicated hero
  • The typical black and white colouring
  • Crime based storyline
  • Rainy weather
  • coustume- Fedora hats and trench coats and suits.
  • Low lighting
  • Complex storylines
  • Don't have happy endings majority of the time
  • Death involved
  • Chiaroscuro; Light and dark
  • Jazz music is played alot
  • Based in the 1940's- 50's most of the time
  • Main protaginist voice over
  • Sound is used alot of build tension and anticipation
  • Smoking

After initial research I have now decided to work in a pair with Ryan mullen. We decided to work together as we both have different skills,and it would benefit us both very much therefore we have now collaborated togther to produce a better outcome with our now wide range of abilities.

Teaser trailers

What is a teaser trailer?

A teaser trailer is a shorter version of a theatrical trailer. The purpose is to tease the audience and grab their attention and make them want to watch more and therefore go and see the film. They are often very short, snappy and exciting. Varying in length from 30 seconds till around 1:30. Teaser trailers create a feeling of mystery and don't also show you the whole story,which is used to entice the target audience. A typical teaser trailer is released months in advance, this device is used to build up anticipation and excitement about the upcoming film.

Structure;

  • Title of the film
  • Soundtrack
  • Director
  • Narrative
  • Flashbacks
  • Release date
  • Characters
  • Star Characters
  • Films made from same director

How is genre used by different groups for different purposes?

How is genre used by different groups for different purposes?

Genre can be used to categorise films, which allows consumers to choose in a clear way what kind of film they want to see, from their initial expectations of the genre.
 "Mamma Mia" the film, audiences will expect big song and dance as they have an idea of the narrative, so their expectations will be achieved as the film genre is a musical. From this the producer has achieved also as the expectations of the consumer will have been achieved as the film has conformed to it's conventions, although sometimes this may not be a good thing as they consumer may get bored of the same conventions of the genre in every film similar.
Yet some of the conventions in this Mamma Mia have been subverted. A famous actor Pierce Brosnan, who is typically know for appearing in action films such as James bond is a main protagonist within this film. Therefore the producer is going again the conventions of the musical genre but mixing it up a little. From this the producer is hoping that the audience will like the change and the subversion.

Why should a film maker consider genre throughout the film production process?

It allows the producer to gain better understanding of were the film is going to go, and better knowledge on the plot and the actors and actresses that may fit the roles and conform to a genre. Such as Rachel McAdams who is often seen in romantic drama's,so therefore she will be a stereotypical romantic actress to choose to star in other films matching a similar genre. Film makers also use genre to consider the timing of when the film should be brought out in cinemas. For example bringing out Despicable Me just before the holidays, as it's target market is children, then all the children will be off school and therefore will go and see this film. So the film makers know how to target their audience from genre as well, but also from this they can establish when to show the trailers on tv.
