Animated Storyboard

Animatic

This is mine and ryan's animated storyboard for our trailer. We took our storyboard and turned it animated and added soundeffects and a soundtrack based upon our plans for the trailer so give us a sense of using movie maker and a sense of how our trailer will end up being like. Also it gives us a vision of the outcome and how long our trailer might be. From this me and ryan decided that we quite like the lenth of the film and fits to be a teaser trailer but also we now feel more confident about using the different programmes on the computer.

Crowd funding trailers

Crowd Funding

Some people produce teaser trailers and theatrical trailers to exhibit their film in which they wish to get 'crowd fuding' so that they can finish their film off. It isn't a typical hollywood trailer, as it's used to promote a film which has not yet been made due to the lack of money there is so they advertise to gain money.
There are lots of examples of real film noir trailers, mostly for independent film companies. This means they are more arthouse rather than Hollywood blockbusters and so more likely to feature conventions you could emulate.

Below is a example of one trailer produced for crowd funding purposes.

TAIL-JOB trailer by Mario Vrbancic from Jelena Kupsjak on Vimeo.

'Tail Job' is trailer from people using crowd funding to try and finish off their film. It's an experimental neo-noir film.
''We are currently crowd funding on Indiegogo so that the film can be finished. You can find out everything about our campaign by visiting the link http://igg.me/at/TailJob/x/3166335''

Independant trailer

Independant trailer- Research.

These are two trailers from indpendant production companys, we researched into them as we are making our trailer as if we were an independant company creating a trailer so therefore we looked into them to see how they produced a trailer and film with not much resources as we are too.

This is a Trailer for an independent film called neighbouring sounds from this you can tell that it is in fact a very low budget film due to the very simple shots which are being used, they are not complex at all this then gives me and ryan an advantage due to the fact that we can apply these very simple yet effective on what the trailer is try to convey.

This trailer is called the time being official this is another independent movie trailer and is another example of a low budget movie made with very limited resources to it. This trailer is very effective in getting the audience gripped this is through the use of a lot of sound to give the trailer more impact and also the use of colour of used to make the trailer more effective, this makes the overall impression of the trailer much better for the audience to engage with and then want to go and see it.

Form these two trailers me and ryan are able to see how we too can acheive a effective trailer using limited resources and how we can apply the use of camera shots and angles and also how we are going to use different sounds this is going to help us in the production of our trailer.

A level Trailer

 A level teaser trailer

We researched into other Alevel students trailer from another school, they acheived a grade A. Me and ryan decided to look at their trailer and deconstruct it to help us in creating ours and to see better ways in which we can improve the planning and research for our trailer. Although this is not a trailer for a film noir, it can still help us as it's a teaser trailer but also is produced by students similar to us therefore we have similar resources as us.

From deconstructing this trailer, we learned that it was a teaser trailer so straight away benefited to us as we are creating a teaser trailer. Then we went into looking at the narrative of this trailer. We are seeing a story about a girl who maybe is new to a school and is alone, we also see her find a book in the school and then from then bad occurances are happening and strange sightings. Also the trailer doesn't show everything in order as what will happen in the film therefore this gives you the thought of curiosity to the audience, also you don't find out exactly what is happening so again this creates a sense of mysterious and makes the audience want to go and then see the film to find out what happens. This is what we want our trailer to be like.
This trailer also includes a lot of sound and sound effects which helps what you see you seem more realistic but also it creates a certin atmosphere and draws the audiences attention, from this me and ryan think that in our storyboarding and planning we will need to include more good sound effects that help create that atmosphere and versimilitude that we want. Another thing that we found from this trailer is that we are going to make our editing more rapid and add more cuts in our trailer to create the quick and snappy effect of a teaser trailer. Also within this we will involve a more wide range of camera angles to create tension and make the audience more appealed to the it. Likewise we will consider the background of our scenes and shots to make sure that the background and surroundings are apporiate and will keep the trailer like a actuall trailer and not as if it just crested by students.

Audience research

Audience Research

To establish my target audience I have create a survey asking a few questions to find out about key aspects and to help me gain more research to help me in my film trailer.

After getting the responses from my survey, I analysed the results and this has given me an idea of what I can include in my trailer. I have shown my results through pie charts on slide share.

From my results It has helped me to build and audience profile, this will help me a lot through my process.

This is a audience profile of a typical member of our target audience for our trailer.

Our main desired target audience is non gender specific as the main male protagonist will act as sex appeal and attract a female target audience. And it will appeal to males also as there is a femme fatale who also is represented as having sex appeal, this exemplifies the Laura mulvey male gaze theory.
Typical target audience.
-Someone who enjoys intellectual pleasure from watching a film.
-Enjoys watching films and is a regular cinema goer.

-Likes a wide range of film genres.

-Is quite studious but relaxes by watching films.

-Fans of film Noir.

-Between the ages of 15- 35

Trailer certification

From my survey it helped me decided that my film target audience is to be between 15-35 years old. Therefore the film certification should be a 15. Still I felt more research into this was appropriate.
I have looked at quite a few trailers to find out what certification each of the films are to gather a better understanding of who my audience for our film trailer is for. Below are just a range of modern film noir films that I researched into.

  • Drive- 18
  • Blade Runner- 15
  • Momento-15
  • The Lookout-15
  • Public Enemies-15
  • Shutter island-15
  • Double Idemnity- PG
  • Gangsta Squad- 15
From this we have decided to make the certification for our film a 15, as this means that it will be more open to a wider audience also the story line will be better suited for this age and plus.

Box office figures

Looking at a few of the films I just previously stated I then researched into the Box office figures from these films to see which ones were popular. From the popular ones this could help us in creating our film trailer to see why it was so good and the use of different camera angles and the different affects created.

  • Drive- total domestic gross - $35,060,689
  • Shutter island- total domestic gross $128,012,934
  • Public enemies- total domestic gross - $97,104,669
These are the films that are and have been most influential to us so far. Looking at their total
domestic gross profit so far, suggests it's popularity and therefore the audience must like what
they see. F

 Survey
We gave 30 people our synopsis, they were all 15-20 year olds so they are within our target market. This is a few of opinions;

·        ‘’It is an interesting story, and it doesn’t give too much away.’’

·        ‘’I like the fact that there isn’t too many characters.’’

·        ‘’ I think it might be better if it was a theatrical trailer’’

·        ‘’Quite confused as to what is the film is about.’’

We looked at the comments and took on board what people have said. We decided that we want our trailer to be a teaser and not a theatrical as we want our trailer to suggest mystery and create tension and curiosity, and don’t want to give too much of the story away so therefore we want our trailer to stay a teaser trailer. Also the fact you don’t really know what’s going on will make you want to find out therefore will make you want to go and see that film so therefore we believe that this is a good element to it.

Focus Group

Within our media studies class me and Ryan gained positive feedback on our initial synopsis pitch. All of the class agreed that they liked the idea of the audience being unaware of what the storyline was as it made them want to find out what is going on therefore they would have to go and see the film also this was this same as the amount of characters in our trailer, there is only 2 main protagonists and a few people like this. Our teacher liked the fact that the storyline was quite complex and made you think, but also the group liked the constant hints and reflections of the film noir style and conventions and we were praised by this. So we are happy with what we have so far also we will continue to develop it.
